Which lock we fit afterwards
The old lock is open. The bike is not safe yet. This is what we actually put back on a city bike, an e-bike or a cargo bike. Not a ranking. What still holds in this city.
AXA, the Dutch ring lock
AXA sits in the frame of most Dutch city bikes. Defender for an ordinary bike, Imenso if you want a wider shackle, Solid when the frame is tight, Victory on many e-bikes. The key is small. It snaps in the cylinder. That is the lock we open most often.
ART 2 is what many policies ask for a city bike. For an e-bike or a cargo bike it is often too light. A ring lock holds the rear wheel. It does not hold the bike to a post. That is the mistake we see the morning after.
Locksmith’s note: keep the AXA in the frame, and add a chain or a U-lock through the frame and around the post.
Abus, when the bike is worth more
Abus is what we bring when the lock has to be heavy. A chain, a Bordo folding lock, a Granit U-lock. ART 3 or 4 if the policy of an e-bike or a cargo bike asks for it. An Abus cable is still a cable. We do not fit that as the only lock.
Locksmith’s note: the Bordo sits in a mount on the frame and does not rattle in a bag. Too short, and it will not go round an Amsterdam post plus your rear fork. Send a photo of the mount. Not every hole is a Bordo.
Kryptonite and Trelock
Kryptonite New York or Evolution is the U-lock we open when the key is lost, and the one we put back when the old lock has given up. Heavy. Measure the post, or it does not fit.
Trelock is the other German shelf: chain and folding lock. Same job as Abus if the hinges and the cylinder are sound. We do not care about the logo. We care whether we can still open the head later without cutting your rim.
How to choose
Use two different locks. A thief usually carries tools for one type. A ring lock plus a chain is more annoying than two of the same. ART is a test rating. It says nothing about a lock that sits crooked in the frame.
We measure on site and tell you the price before we fit it. A city bike is not a cargo bike. If you are not sure, send a photo of the frame and of the policy. Then the right lock is on the van.
