Men’s Dutch bike
Buy a men’s Dutch bike in Amsterdam
This page is about the Dutch men’s bike. Straight frame, high top tube, riding upright — not omafietsen or fatbikes.
Message about this men’s bikeHigh tube, upright back
A Dutch men’s bike has a high top tube. You swing a leg over, you sit upright, you look over the traffic. In Amsterdam that is the commute bike, the teacher’s bike, the bike for someone who will not hunch. Not a racer, not a hip single-speed that squeaks after one winter.
Gazelle, Batavus, Cortina
What we look for: Gazelle Orange or Esprit, Batavus Champion, Cortina U4 men’s, sometimes a Sparta. Hub gears (usually 3 or 7), coaster or roller brake, chain case, rack, mudguards, and a ring lock in the frame. Without those it is not a men’s bike for this city.
Size 56, 61 or 65
Size beats colour. Too small and the knees come up; too big and you never stop relaxed on a bridge. Message your height. We say 56, 61 or 65 — no guessing from a webshop photo.
What we check on a used men’s bike
Used men’s bikes in Amsterdam have kerbs behind them. We check hub, rims, spokes, stem and whether the ring lock still turns. If the frame cracks at the seatpost, it does not leave with us.
Ring lock in the frame
Every men’s bike we prepare gets a lock that holds in Amsterdam. Opening is the job; we do not sell a men’s bike without a real lock. ART if your insurer asks.
